HARVEY SCHMIDT

New York Herald Tribune

 New York: 2 a.m.

By the 1960s Harvey’s uniquely fresh illustration style had achieved perhaps its highest level of popularity.  His work appeared in most of the major publications and produced a distinct and high level of graphic excitement. One of his most unusual assignments was for the Sunday magazine supplement of the New York Herald Tribune, a highly respected daily newspaper now long defunct except for its magazine section which has survived as the nucleus and inspiration of today’s weekly “New York” magazine. That assignment, titled “New York: 2 a.m.,” took Harvey, out into those mean and scary streets to capture on paper the moods typical of the city that never sleeps. Here are four of those impressions.
